[00:00:00] Denisha: In the Bible, there are many names that Jesus is called, but what do they [00:00:05] mean? And what do they mean for us in the unique story that is our lives? [00:00:10] In this episode, we're going to discover why he is called [00:00:15] Wonderful Counselor and Mighty God. And we pray that you'll gain a new perspective on the [00:00:20] Savior who was born in a manger over 2000 years ago and how those [00:00:25] names are so very relevant in your life today.
Welcome to [00:00:30] living the reclaim life podcast. I'm Denisha. We're glad you're here for [00:00:35] conversations that revive hope, inspire healing, and encourage you to live a vibrant [00:00:40] life with Christ. So grab a cup of coffee as we chat with today's guest. [00:00:45] Valerie, it has been a while since you and I did an episode together.
I think this is going [00:00:50] to be super fun today. I hope
[00:00:52] Valerie: so. I hope other people think so. [00:00:55] You and I always have a lot of fun, but that's very true. Yeah. No, [00:01:00] it's so good to be back with all you all, because I know that we're talking [00:01:05] about some of my favorite things and it comes from the Bible. So, you know, I like [00:01:10] talking about God's words, so this should be, this should be fun.
[00:01:13] Denisha: Yeah. And can we even [00:01:15] believe that we are like this close to Christmas? It's crazy.
[00:01:18] Valerie: Are you one of those people that starts [00:01:20] celebrating on November 1st? No.
[00:01:21] Denisha: No, I'm not. Now, my son put up his Christmas tree [00:01:25] in his room after Halloween, and I said, oh honey, it's after Thanksgiving. He goes, not this [00:01:30] year. I said, okay, great.
So here we already have a little tree up in his room, which feels good. It feels good. [00:01:35] As we go into Christmas, We're going to dive into a passage that gets quoted a lot [00:01:40] around Christmas. And in fact, I was at Hobby Lobby the other day and I saw a [00:01:45] pillow that said for unto us, a child is born. Now we see that and [00:01:50] we go, Oh, that's beautiful.
That's perfect for Christmas. It was red with gold writing on it. [00:01:55] Now that's the King James version of Isaiah 9, 6, [00:02:00] and we're going to, we're going to dive. in and really take apart this passage through this [00:02:05] episode and the next episode. And let me read it to you, Isaiah nine, six. Now this [00:02:10] is 700 years before Jesus was born and it [00:02:15] says, for to us, a child is born to us.
The son is given and the government [00:02:20] shall be upon his shoulder and his name shall be called wonderful counselor, [00:02:25] mighty God, everlasting father, prince of peace. So in this [00:02:30] episode, Valerie and I are going to talk about those first two names, Wonderful Counselor, [00:02:35] Mighty God, and then in our next episode, we're going to dive into Everlasting Father [00:02:40] and Prince of Peace, and our hope is, I know as we dove into these, it [00:02:45] really surprised us of just how amazing these names of [00:02:50] Jesus are in our lives today.
So we hope that you feel the same [00:02:55] way. So as we get started, one of the things I noticed is he will be [00:03:00] called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God. And we see in the Bible how [00:03:05] important names are. So Valerie, when you were naming your kids, how did you [00:03:10]come up with their names?
[00:03:11] Valerie: Yeah, I actually get asked that a lot.
And [00:03:15] when we had our first, well, even just before we had her, we were [00:03:20] given this book and it's called the name book. And I can't think of the authors right now, but you could [00:03:25] probably Google it. But it was the first book, you know, baby name books where I saw that [00:03:30] it wasn't just whatever Latin meaning or inherent meaning it's called, but it had a spiritual [00:03:35] meaning.
And then a scripture attached to it. And it was just so [00:03:40] incredible to read through that, pray about it and really seek God is like, [00:03:45] what are we going to name our child? Like what is going to speak, right? You don't know your child [00:03:50] yet, but we had, my husband and I had gone through this conference right before we [00:03:55] got pregnant with our first, that really talked about.
your identity and destiny. [00:04:00] And I think about that as we're going to talk about Jesus, that these names that were [00:04:05] prophesied back in Isaiah speak to his identity and his [00:04:10]destiny. And so for us, yeah, it started with a name book, but we've been very intentional [00:04:15]about like each kid, we didn't speak their name till they were born.
And so drove some of our [00:04:20] family friends crazy. What's the name? What's the name? But we were just very intentional about when they were [00:04:25] born that we spoke. their identity. We spoke their name into existence. And [00:04:30] it's really been cool for us to see we have four kids now that they have [00:04:35] really lived out their names.
You know, one means God is good. One means [00:04:40] the Lord is good. And how we can see how different those kids and different [00:04:45] Personalities and what we've gone through in life that we can say, Hey, this is what your name means [00:04:50] and that they can live that out. So yeah, I'm really passionate about that, but I think it's going to be exciting as we [00:04:55] dive into these different names of Jesus.
We're going to see that we're going to see how [00:05:00] he lived out that name in a real time.
[00:05:04] Denisha: And we [00:05:05] definitely see the effort that goes in the Bible of explaining different names and [00:05:10] what they mean and what they mean in their life. And even when God renames. [00:05:15] People, there's an intentionality behind that with a specific meaning.
So [00:05:20] I think this is going to be a fun journey.
[00:05:22] Valerie: Yeah. So let's dive in a little bit. We [00:05:25] look in the Old Testament and Isaiah is in the Old Testament, kind of the first [00:05:30] big section of our Bibles. And we were going to throw around that word prophecy a lot and [00:05:35] prophecy. It's kind of just this. Fancy word for saying that this was, you know, this [00:05:40] was God telling like his people to be prepared for what was to come.[00:05:45]
And so, you know, 700 years before the birth of Jesus, [00:05:50] this prophecy was spoken. And there was a lot of turmoil and a lot of fear going on [00:05:55] at the time that this prophecy was spoken. And so As Denisha said, Isaiah 9, [00:06:00] 6 says, For unto us a child is going to be born, to us a son is given, and [00:06:05] the government shall be upon his shoulder.
And he will be called Wonderful Counselor, [00:06:10] Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace. So we're going to look, [00:06:15] like we said, at those first two names. And we are going to sound really smart right now, [00:06:20] Denisha. We're going to sound really, really smart. And we were actually having a little [00:06:25] fun trying to speak.
Hebrew, and I am. I'm not [00:06:30] Jewish, so I'm probably not going to do the best job, but we wanted to give you the [00:06:35] Hebrew word for Wonderful Counselor, because it's so neat. Sometimes when we go to the original [00:06:40] language, there's so much more meaning in it than just even our English [00:06:45] language can say. So, so Wonderful Counselor in Hebrew means Pele.[00:06:50]
I know we were trying to get the guttural. Yeah. [00:06:55] So, and Pele means beyond understanding. I love that, Danisha, like [00:07:00] basically too wonderful for words. And can we think about [00:07:05] that? I was talking to somebody about that, I think in one of our life groups about like, [00:07:10] if we could understand God. He wouldn't be God.
And I think about [00:07:15] even that, like, this meaning is that Jesus is going to be called Wonderful Counselor. He's going to be so [00:07:20] wonderful that we're not going to even have the language to fully encapsulate [00:07:25] who He is. And so Isaiah is trying to describe that one day we're going to have the Savior of the [00:07:30] world.
Jesus. And we don't even have enough words to describe him. [00:07:35] And then Yaetz is the word translated as counselor. [00:07:40] And I think many of us know what a counselor does and is so, you know, to advise [00:07:45] or to consult or to guide somebody. And so when you put those two [00:07:50] meanings together, you can say it like this, you can say one day.
A [00:07:55] son will be born, a child will be given to us. His name will be Peleus. He will [00:08:00]be the wonderful counselor. And what's so neat is that as we [00:08:05] know, Jesus came in the flesh. He was God in flesh [00:08:10] and he is so big. He's the alpha and omega, the beginning, the end. [00:08:15] Yet this is what is so incredible is that he knows [00:08:20] you.
He knows me, he knows you, he cares for you, and he [00:08:25] understands exactly what you're going through. And that's why [00:08:30] he can be our wonderful counselor. It's so
[00:08:33] Denisha: personal. Yeah. Right. When we [00:08:35] break it down that way, we realize just what a personal Lord we have, whatever [00:08:40] struggles we are going through. He is our counselor and he understands our struggles.
[00:08:45] It's described in Hebrews chapter four, verse 15. Speaking of [00:08:50] Jesus, it says, For we do not have a high priest who is unable to empathize [00:08:55] with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we [00:09:00] are, yet he did not sin. Referring to Jesus as our high priest, our [00:09:05] savior, our wonderful counselor, he has been through what we are going [00:09:10] through.
And I think sometimes I can forget that, that he's been tempted in [00:09:15] every way, right? That we're tempted, yet he was without sin. That he understands [00:09:20] our pain and our hurt, and he experienced real life just as we [00:09:25] do. And in verse 16, it says, then because of those things, [00:09:30] right? Then let us approach the throne of grace with confidence so that we can [00:09:35]receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need.
And [00:09:40] I wonder if some of you are listening right now. And if we're honest, if you would [00:09:45] say that you are in a significant time of need, sometimes the [00:09:50] holidays can be an amazing time of celebration and sometimes it can be really [00:09:55] hard. So I want to encourage you that with the good news, that there [00:10:00] is one who knows you, who is here to help.
He is Jesus, the wonderful [00:10:05] counselor. And Valerie, I don't know about you, but... There was a time in my [00:10:10] life when I thought in order to come to Jesus that I had to be perfect whole and [00:10:15] put together Right, and I know it can be a very big misconception [00:10:20] That we have to have it all together in order to come to Jesus when actually he [00:10:25] receives us just as
[00:10:26] Valerie: we are Yeah, well, let's talk about that.
Let's make that a [00:10:30] little more practical because I'm with you. I sometimes You know, I've struggled with [00:10:35] that too many, many times that even, you know, when I do mess up, I'm like, okay, I [00:10:40] got to get together so that Jesus will approve of me. And that is farther from the truth. And, [00:10:45] you know, and we know too, we have human counselors and there are some [00:10:50] amazing counselors out there and those are wonderful resources.
But, you know, why do we go to a counselor? [00:10:55] We don't go to a counselor because we have it all together. We go to a counselor because we have a [00:11:00] real need. We're, you know, quote unquote sick. We're, we're hurt. We need [00:11:05] somebody to listen to us, to help us. And that's okay. And that's what Jesus is [00:11:10] saying. He's saying, I am the wonderful counselor.
You come to me because you are sick. [00:11:15] And we can even replace that with imperfect, not put together, spiritually [00:11:20] sick. And, you know, when Jesus came, he came for those. who were [00:11:25] in need. In Luke chapter five, verse 31, Jesus says, it's not [00:11:30] the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick. And he says, I've not come to [00:11:35] call the righteous.
I've come to call the sinner to repentance. So [00:11:40] again, Jesus is our wonderful counselor. He comes. for you. He [00:11:45] comes for the sick, for the broken.
[00:11:47] Denisha: I know that I'm personally so thankful for that [00:11:50] because I know that even after walking with the Lord now for years and [00:11:55] years, I know that parts of me are still sick and in need of healing.
[00:12:00] And for our listeners, I wonder what parts of you are sick. Where do you [00:12:05] hurt? Because truthfully, we're all sick at one point or another, and it doesn't have to be a [00:12:10] physical illness. It can be an emotional pain. You know, if we could sit down face to [00:12:15] face, as Valerie and I are right now, and just have a conversation, maybe you [00:12:20] could see a part of my sickness that you would want to press on and ask me about it.[00:12:25]
And I might resist. I might say, Hey, don't go there. Leave me alone, or I don't have a problem with [00:12:30] this. Or I might say the traditional, I'm fine. I'm fine. [00:12:35] Some of us try to mask it and pretend like it's not there. And the [00:12:40] holidays, they have a good way of magnifying things, right? They can make good [00:12:45] things look even better, and they can make hard things look even worse.
The [00:12:50] holidays often magnify those sicknesses. Some are just depressed. [00:12:55] The heaviness, the weight of this world just brings on a sense of hopelessness. [00:13:00] Others, some of us live in fear. We just live with this anxiety of what's going [00:13:05] to happen next. And then there's the stress that we deal with, right? We look at our to [00:13:10] do list and we think, how are we going to get it all done?
How am I going to shop for [00:13:15] everybody? I've got family coming over. The house has to be perfect. The meals need to be, the [00:13:20] holidays can really magnify our stress. For some of us, [00:13:25] it's financial stress. It's like, oh, you know, we've had a hard time, now we [00:13:30] have Christmas coming up, and how are we ever going to do it?
Acknowledging [00:13:35] our pain and answering the question, where are we sick? helps us to remember the [00:13:40] good news that there is a wonderful counselor. His name is Jesus and he [00:13:45] came for all of those who are sick, including each of us. [00:13:50]
[00:13:50] Valerie: Yeah, so let's get practical here. Let's look at three [00:13:55] biblical principles that Deal with just how we can find that [00:14:00] healing with our wonderful counselor.
And the first one is we [00:14:05] learn to be brutally honest with the counselor, right? And we talk a [00:14:10] lot about that here with reclaim story is that we want to provide a safe place to be [00:14:15] honest. And we have that safe place, Denisha, every single day because [00:14:20] God is always with us. We need to be honest with Jesus.
And I, you know, Denise, I've heard [00:14:25] even people say, it's like, well, Jesus knows everything. Right. But we look at the Psalms. We [00:14:30] look at how David came with a broken heart and confessed like Jesus [00:14:35] wants us. That's part of that relationship with him to be honest with him [00:14:40] to say, God, just open up my heart, you know, and to be [00:14:45] honest, you know, there was a time where I had to, Learn [00:14:50] to be okay with being angry.
I gotta just say, God, I'm angry. God, I'm [00:14:55] sad. God, I'm struggling with trusting you. All of that is about being [00:15:00] honest. And we try to wear these masks even around God, right? I mean, God can [00:15:05] see through the mask better than Superman. He can see through it. He knows. [00:15:10] us in and out. But I think sometimes we may struggle [00:15:15] with feeling safe with him.
Maybe we've tried to be honest with [00:15:20] Humans with relationships here on earth and we've been hurt, but God is not [00:15:25] like that. He is safe. He sees us. He knows us. He [00:15:30]knows us. He knows everything about us, but he loves us. [00:15:35] So some of you right now meet need to take that first step of being. Honest [00:15:40] with God for the first time, or maybe for the first time in a long [00:15:45] time.
In Psalm 55 verse 22, we're told to cast our [00:15:50] cares on the Lord for he will sustain us. And in the healing curriculum we're walking [00:15:55] through, I just love the definition of casting of just really just hurling it out to the [00:16:00] sea. Second, we learn to listen. [00:16:05] Then for his voice, you know, there is so much Danesha, [00:16:10] right?
There are so many voices that. We are bombarded [00:16:15] with every single day, and I'm not even just talking about like auditory voices, but you know [00:16:20] what we read on the internet and everything we are just bombarded with [00:16:25] so much that we can struggle with like, well, what's really true, but then we [00:16:30] have to be still, and we have to learn to listen to the [00:16:35]counselor's voice.
And now you may say, well, how do I know? [00:16:40] It's God, you know, how do we know it's God? How does Jesus speak? And here's four [00:16:45] ways that I want to give you today. And one is his word. You know, I [00:16:50] even tell my children this, you know, when they're trying to make a decision, I'm like, what does the Bible [00:16:55] say? What has God already told us in his word?
You know, [00:17:00] sometimes I hear people say, how do I know? what God's will is. Well, we have a beautiful [00:17:05] book called the Bible that he has already told us very clearly [00:17:10] what his will is. And so that's one way we get to learn his voice is [00:17:15] we read what he has to tell us in the Bible. And then Even there's many [00:17:20] Proverbs and other books that talk about a trusted friend, a wise [00:17:25] counselor in a friend or coworker.
So even going to a trusted [00:17:30] friend that you know, follows and trusts God, that can be another way [00:17:35] that We can learn to know what God's voice is. And then I know this for [00:17:40]you, Denisha, you've shared many times that he speaks to us through worship, which, [00:17:45] you know, worship songs, Christian music is full of truth from his word.[00:17:50]
So sometimes just God speaks to us so gently yet so [00:17:55] powerfully through a worship song. So learn to listen to his voice through [00:18:00] that. And then. We don't always like this method, but I'll be honest, [00:18:05] we don't always like it. But he also speaks to us through trials, through hard [00:18:10] times, through circumstances that are just not maybe what we want [00:18:15] them to be.
But we learn to know that it's him, that he's with [00:18:20] us, even through the hard times. And, you know, John 10, 27 says that. [00:18:25] My sheep listen to my voice, that they know me and they follow [00:18:30] me. I've been in traditional counseling has been very helpful at times, but sometimes I'm like, [00:18:35] okay, I went through, I had three months with this counselor.
Why do I feel like nothing [00:18:40] is better? And then sometimes God's just like, because you got to do [00:18:45] what the counselor told you to do. And I think that with God too, he's [00:18:50] so clear in his word, it's like. Do this, and you will be blessed. [00:18:55] Do this. And, you know, this is the right thing to do. This is the way you should go.[00:19:00]
And so we need to be honest. We need to learn to hear him speak to us. [00:19:05] But then we got to do it. We got to do what he tells us to do. And [00:19:10] so another, just real quickly, as you're listening to this podcast, we did a whole [00:19:15] series with Norma Donovan, one of our ministry friends, ministry partners, and [00:19:20] in episode 95, they're all right together.
[00:19:25] She does a wonderful series with Denisha, a four part series about [00:19:30] how to know God's voice. How do we know he's speaking to us? So make [00:19:35] sure to listen to that if you want more on that. I want to encourage you guys [00:19:40] listening that whatever you are facing today or will face, that [00:19:45] you have a wonderful counselor right there with you, present with you [00:19:50] every single day.
And he's so great. He's so wonderful that we [00:19:55] don't even have the words to describe him, but we can be honest with him. [00:20:00] We listen to his voice and when we do what he tells us to do, there is just such [00:20:05] peace. Just
[00:20:06] Denisha: wonderful counselor. That is a lot for [00:20:10] us to think about and pray about and lean into. Let's go on [00:20:15] to mighty God.
We live in Arizona. And I have to tell you that we have [00:20:20] some of the most beautiful sunsets around monsoon season. That's [00:20:25] kind of our rainy season here in the desert. And there have been times that I've pulled my [00:20:30] car over and just marveled at the sky, at the work of our creator, of [00:20:35] our mighty God. I think of Jeremiah 32, 17, and it [00:20:40] says, Ah, sovereign Lord, you have made the heavens and earth by your great power and [00:20:45] outstretched arm.
Nothing is too hard for you. I love that. Nothing [00:20:50] is too hard for him. And I almost want to write that like in a dry erase marker, like [00:20:55] on my bathroom mirror. Nothing is too hard for him. Not my problems, not [00:21:00] employment, not diagnosis. Nothing is too hard for God because he is mighty [00:21:05] God. He is all powerful.
[00:21:07] Valerie: I'm going to say some big words here, [00:21:10] but I think they just encapsulate and express even more what that means, [00:21:15] him being a mighty God. So first, God is omniscient. [00:21:20] God is omniscient. And basically that means he knows. [00:21:25] Everything. And the Bible says he actually knows your thoughts, you know, kind of like we talked [00:21:30]about him being the wonderful counselor, like he does know everything about us, which [00:21:35]should make us feel safe, but he still wants us to come to him and to have that relationship [00:21:40]with him.
So, but he knows everything and we can depend on that, but he's [00:21:45] also omnipresent, which that to me gives me so come so much comfort, [00:21:50] right? Like no matter where I'm at. He is with [00:21:55] me. And that is amazing. You know, I know, just even having kids, right, you know, when [00:22:00] they first start to understand that it's like, wait, God is everywhere.
Like, like, [00:22:05] how is that possible?
[00:22:07] Denisha: It's way better than mom having eyes in the back of her head. [00:22:10] Yeah,
[00:22:10] Valerie: I know. I know. It's so cool. And what amazes me is that right [00:22:15] now, wherever you guys are listening, all over the world. [00:22:20] God is with you. God's presence. He's with you. God [00:22:25] is omnipotent, which means he can do anything.
So here we got, he [00:22:30] knows everything he's everywhere and he can do anything. [00:22:35]And like you said, Denisha, there's nothing. Too hard for [00:22:40] God. Nothing is going to shock him. No matter what we say to him, he knows it [00:22:45] all. He's ready for it all and he can do all and he is [00:22:50] almighty. Maybe today in your life, you're asking [00:22:55] the honest question, okay, well, where is that power in my [00:23:00] life?
You've told me that God knows everything. You've told me that God is everywhere. [00:23:05] What if I don't feel him? What if I don't trust that? Where [00:23:10] is God's power in my life? Well, and we get that, [00:23:15] we get that, you know, I'll be honest. I've asked God that same question. Where are you God? [00:23:20] And maybe you're in a really tough road with a relationship.
And like we talked about [00:23:25] with the holidays coming up. You're just dreading that you're dreading [00:23:30] seeing that person because you can't seem to reconcile with that person. And you're saying, God, where are [00:23:35] you? What do I do with this? Or maybe you've had a dream of something happening [00:23:40] and it just hasn't happened yet.
And you're asking God, where is your [00:23:45] power? Where's your power in that? But we want to tell you [00:23:50] it's real. Jesus's power is real and we [00:23:55] just may not see it the way we want to see it. [00:24:00] Uh, I think I need to say that again. We just, we may [00:24:05] not see it the way we want to see it. And you know what, Denisha, we may need to ask [00:24:10] God instead of where is your power?
We may need to say, God, show me [00:24:15] your power.
[00:24:16] Denisha: I think sometimes too, when we're. Needing the power [00:24:20] of God in our life and that supernatural power to get us through. [00:24:25] Sometimes we can be tired and we can be worn out. And I love [00:24:30] Isaiah 40 verse 28 through 31 and he's, do you not know, [00:24:35] have you not heard the Lord is the everlasting God, the creator of the ends of the [00:24:40]earth.
He will not grow tired or weary in his understanding. No one can [00:24:45] fathom. Now, here's the point where his. Strength comes to us. [00:24:50] Verse 29, He gives strength to the weary and increases the power of the weak. [00:24:55] Even youths grow tired and weary. Even the young ones grow tired and weary. I [00:25:00] just want to say that again.
And young men stumble and fall. But those who [00:25:05] hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like [00:25:10] eagles. They will run and not grow weary. They will walk and not faint. [00:25:15] Today. Would you put your hope in Him to be your wonderful [00:25:20]counselor and your mighty God? We are ordinary people, but we [00:25:25] know an extraordinary God.
We pray this message encouraged you [00:25:30] today as you think about your wonderful counselor and mighty God. We'll [00:25:35] see you in two weeks as we talk about the next two names of Jesus in [00:25:40] that passage. We'll see you same time, same place in two weeks. [00:25:45] listening. I pray you found hope in today's conversation and maybe [00:25:50] even feel a little less alone in your story.
